Return of Downers Grove Lives Up to Expectations, Hartley, Schneider secure overall Intelligentsia Cup
For the first time since 2008 the former USPRO criterium championship course in Downers Grove saw racing action, to the delight of both racers and spectators. And the action did not disappoint either, seeing breakaways in both the women’s and men’s pro races.
Chad Hartley (Athlete Octane) put his stamp on the overall series by taking the win on a course where he grew up watching pro racing. Even though a dangerous break formed early his team did not panic. Late in the race a chase group split off the field and caught the break in the final lap, bringing Hartley the chance for the win. Leading out of the final turn ensured he had the best line and he took that lead all the way to the line ahead of Brandon Feehery (Astellas) and Yeison Ulloa (Columbia Specialized).
Even though Peter Olejniczak (SPBC) was mathematically in the hunt for the overall Hartley’s win sealed it with Feehery taking third.
In the women’s race a two-rider break formed half-way through with Morgan Brown (Fearless Femme) and Irena Ossola (Cloud Racing p/b Ride2Recovery). The two built a huge lead and fought it out for the win with the fast Brown easily taking the sprint. With two laps to go a gambler’s prime was dropped and ISCORP’s Lexie Millard went for it — and kept it rolling for a solo third place.
In the overall Sam Schneider (TIBCO) easily cruised in with the overall ahead of Tina Pic (Fearless Femme) returning to where she won a handful of national titles.
Thanks to everyone who made this series possible, from the racers to the fans to the volunteers and officials. See you all in 2015!
